SIA spoke with Tom Larson, president of Velasea, about the company, the security industry and working with SIA.

Tell Us the Story of Your Company.

Tom Larson: Our company was founded based on a need that we identified in the market. Our previous business focused on building servers for various industries. Recognizing a significant opportunity, we decided to pivot and establish a computer engineering company dedicated to the video surveillance space. Our goal was to produce high-quality products tailored to better serve original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and security integrators, addressing a crucial gap in the market.

What Solutions/Services Does Your Business Offer in the Security Industry? And What Makes Your Offerings or Your Company Unique?

TL: Velasea has two distinct business units:

  • OEM: We build hardware for software vendors and produce turnkey appliances for them.
  • Channel Business: We sell infrastructure products such as networking equipment, servers, storage solutions, UPS systems and cellular systems to security integrators for their security projects.

What makes Velasea unique is our dual focus. We provide customized hardware solutions for software vendors while also offering a comprehensive range of infrastructure products to security integrators. This allows us to cater to a wide range of needs within the security industry.

What’s Something We May Not Know About Your Company – Or Something New You’re Doing in Security?

TL:

  • Canopy Remote Management: Allowing security integrators to gain valuable insights into their sites.
  • Collaborations With Video Management System (VMS) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Software Companies: We’re working with VMS and AI software companies to create packages that are more user-friendly and market-ready.

These initiatives highlight our commitment to innovation and enhancing the capabilities of security integrators and software providers.

What Is Your Company’s Vision, and What Are Your Goals for the Security Industry?

TL: Our vision is to make the world a safer place for future generations by leveraging cutting-edge technology and our industry knowledge.

What Do You Think Are the Biggest Opportunities in the Security Industry Right Now?

TL: The biggest opportunity in the security industry is leveraging AI to streamline operations and create business efficiencies for end users that go beyond traditional security functions.

What Are Your Predictions for the Security Industry in the Short and Long Term?

TL: The security industry in the short term is facing a convergence of acquisitions and moving towards a more closed technology solution; however, in the long term this is opening the door for many newer entrants to compete with larger slower to market companies.

What Are the Biggest Challenges Facing Your Company and/or Others in the Security Industry?

TL: One of the biggest challenges revolves around AI software and analytics. There are many analytics companies entering the market, but security integrators are often unaware of these companies and their products. Velasea aims to become a hub for the analytics space. We are closely involved with leading AI companies like NVIDIA and Hailo, so we stay informed about current and upcoming AI solutions. The key challenge is effectively getting these AI solutions to the market.
